After having each other’s backs while in Afghanistan, U.S. Marine Jared Heine had to part ways with his buddy and patrol dog Spike, when his brain injuries forced him to fly back home. Post-traumatic stress disorder started affecting Jared, and he began expressing how much he missed his little buddy. It got to the point where he was so distraught: that his mother Mary decided to find Spike, and reunite the two.
The only obstacle that hindered them was the fact that Spike is already working with a new partner, Officer Laura Taylor, for the past two years. In a wonderful act of humanity Laura gave Spike up so he could return to Jared, despite her great love for the dog. Check out the footage here from CBS Evening News:
